Itaipu dam is located on the border of Brazil and Paraguay on Parana River. It is hydro-electric dam constructed and maintained by both Brazil and Paraguay. Its construction started in 1975 and opened in 1984 with a total cost of US $ 20 billion.

It has an installed power generation capacity of 14 GW(giga watts). It contributes 75% of total consumption of Paraguay and 17% of Brazil. The dam has water catchment area of 1.3 million sq km. The water on the back of the dam extends upto 170 km in length. It has been elected as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
