Great Barrier Reef – Largest structure made by living organisms

Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system. It is situated off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It contains 900 islands spread over 2300 km. The reef is made up of billions tiny coral polyps.

It became World Heritage Site in 1981. The reef is the single largest structure made by living organisms. It is home to many species of fish. It is popular tourist destination in Australia fetching US $3 billion annually. Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular for tourists in the reef. CNN named it one of the Natural Seven Wonders of the World.
